No trip to the Baraboo area is complete without spending time at Devil’s Lake State Park. With its towering quartzite bluffs, deep blue lake, and miles of scenic trails, the park offers something for every kind of adventurer.

Whether you’re up for a challenging hike with rewarding panoramic views, a peaceful paddle across the water, or a relaxing afternoon at the beach, Devil’s Lake delivers an unforgettable experience. From sunrise hikes to sunset picnics, there’s no shortage of ways to soak up the best of this spectacular setting – we’ve listed just a few of our favorite things to do in Devil’s Lake State Park below.

  1. Hiking is one of the most popular things to do in Devil’s Lake State Park, and there are 29 miles of trail to enjoy. One of our favorites, though, is the East Bluff Trail. It’s one of the park’s most iconic trails and is part of the grander Ice Age National Scenic Trail. This moderately challenging route takes you up the eastern bluffs for stunning lake views. As you enjoy this hike, don’t miss a stop at Devil’s Doorway, a striking rock formation that’s a favorite for photos.
  2. Though bikes aren’t allowed on most trails within the park, there is excellent mountain biking on the Uplands Loop Trail.
  3. Get out on the crystal clear, blue waters of Devil’s Lake. Rent a kayak, canoe, or paddleboard to explore the lake from the water. If you prefer a swim, the park has two large sandy beaches perfect for cooling off in the summer months.
  4. The towering quartzite rocks of Devil’s Lake State Park are perfect for rock climbing. In fact, it’s one of the best rock climbing destinations in the Midwest, offering routes for both beginners and experienced climbers.
  5. You don’t have to be adventurous to enjoy the park. One of our favorite things to do at Devil’s Lake State Park is birdwatching and wildlife spotting. Along the trails, look for bald eagles, turkey vultures, and a variety of songbirds. The park is also home to deer, foxes, and other wildlife that add to the adventure.
  6. Similarly, there is great fishing and hunting within the park boundaries—just make sure to follow local regulations governing these activities.

These are just the activities you can enjoy when the weather is a bit nicer.
